Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday, 3:00 to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Please make an appointment in advance.

Course materials to bring to each class:

  • Reporting for the Media, by John Bender, Lucinda Davenport, Michael Drager and Fred Fedler. Ninth edition, 2009.
  • Associated Press Stylebook
  • A sharp pencil
  • Akron Beacon Journal or another daily newspaper as assigned

Optional, but strongly recommended: A memory stick to transport your files between home and lab

Skills you need for the course:

  • Basic typing skills
  • Language competency achieved by successful completion of university-level composition classes

Course objectives:

  • To write leads that emphasize the news.

  • To build news stories suitable for general publication and edit them on deadline.

  • To become proficient in the use of Associated Press style.

  • To ethically evaluate the newsworthiness of people, events and issues.

  • To begin to hone newsgathering techniques, which include skills such as interviewing.

  • To become a good writing coach for yourself.
