If you’re a Newswriting student at The University of Akron, you’ll want to get a generous daily helping of news. The more news you read, watch and listen to, the more you’ll build your newswriting skills.
Whether you are watching, reading or listening to a news report, use your critical thinking skills. Does the story have what it takes to be a good news report? Assess the story for qualities like the following:
- Timeliness: Is the story timely for the media in which it appears?
- Proximity: Did it happen here?
- Unusual nature: Is it about something bizarre, rare or unusual?
- Human interest: Will people want to read about this?
- Helpfulness: Does the story help readers cope with their lives?
